Exhibit A: Michael Greyeyes, an actor of uncommon talent who virtually burns a hole in the screen playing a tormented, murderous, excruciatingly repressed survivor of child abuse in the extraordinary drama, Wild Indian. Did you know about Michael Greyeyes? He endures one hellish round after another with his father; tries to explain his bloated, bruised face to his teachers; and suffers relentless bullying from racist students. There are a number of startlingly violent moments in Wild Indian , but none quite like this one. At his exquisitely styled home, Michael is greeted by his blonde, impeccably dressed wife Kate Bosworth.

The opening section, set in the s, introduces us to two Anishinaabe youth: Makwa Phoenix Wilson and his best friend and cousin, Teddo Julian Gopal , living on a Midwest reservation. Cut to the present day when the two have taken very different paths. Teddo Spencer, the Twilight series , on the other hand, is just being released from prison after serving a year sentence, his face heavily covered by garish tattoos.

Two men learn to confront a traumatic secret they share involving the savage murder of a schoolmate. However, the longer the adulthood portion goes on simultaneously becoming more complicated and gripping, there is also a constant feeling that only 15 minutes of childhood scenes does a disservice to the rest of the character study, especially considering the film itself is not even 90 minutes and the tiled performances are likewise stirring. Makwa also appears dangerously upset that a white classmate is interested in a boy two years younger than her, presumably wishing she talked to him. This speaks to his confused mindset regarding wanting to escape anything to do with his Native American identity as he does go on to marry a white woman played by Kate Bosworth , and of course, unsettling vibes to let out senseless rage. Makwa notices this boy walking in the woods and then proceeds, with dead eyes, to shoot him.

The title of "Wild Indian" is as much of a provocation as the movie itself. Set in the s and the present day, with a prologue set centuries in the past, it's about a couple of Ojibwe boys from a reservation who cover up the murder of a classmate, then carry guilt over their shared participation in that crime into adulthood. Michael Greyeyes plays the adult version of the killer, Mak'wa, who changes his name to Michael and gets a respectable office job at a white-owned company Jesse Eisenberg , who coproduced the film, plays his coworker , plus a blond Anglo wife Kate Bosworth and a beautiful baby.
