Chicago has transformed into a true queer destination in recent years, no longer looked at as some podunk midwestern city cast in the shadow of coastal meccas like New York and Los Angeles. We have some of the most renowned drag performers, incredible queer nightlife artists of all kinds, and queer neighborhoods teeming with bars and clubs. Much of that is thanks to the hard work of folks like the Chicago Black Drag Council and countless other queer Black nightlife prose, all backed up by those of us happily partaking in the scene. Their parties, cookouts, balls, and more are not only incredibly lit moments brimming with Black expression and joy, but the proceeds benefit supporting TGNC folks in immediate financial need, putting together protection and self-care kits for the community, and setting up self-defense classes for Black trans folks in Chicago. As one of the busiest industrial centers and transportation hubs in the United States, Chicago at the beginning of the twentieth century attracted thousands of single women and men with new employment opportunities and nonfamilial living arrangements in the lodging-house districts of the Near North and Near South Sides. The anonymous and transient character of these neighborhoods permitted the development of Chicago's lesbian and gay subculture. During the early years of the century, much of this subculture was centered in the Levee, a working-class entertainment and vice district. Here, several saloons and dance halls catered to gay men and featured female impersonation acts. By the s, a visible lesbian and gay enclave was well established in the Near North Side bohemian neighborhood known as Towertown.

Chicago has long had a gay neighborhood. Beginning in the s there was active homosexual nightlife in Towertown , adjacent to the Water Tower. Increasing rents forced gay-friendly establishments steadily northwards, moving through Old Town and Lincoln Park along Clark Street and on to Boys Town. In Illinois was the first state to repeal its sodomy law. Effective LGBT political involvement began in the s alongside the civil rights movement , with organizations such as Chicago Gay Liberation.
