Characters in the stories do go to extremes in the situation; panic, terror, anxiety attacks, etc. Granted, everyone is different and some people are stronger-willed than others, but I would think that more characters would be overwhelmed with the shrinking to the point that they could not mentally accept the new state of reality in their world.
