It is revealed that Quinn is a stripper at the Lusty Leopard. While getting ready for her performance at the club, Quinn is seen talking to a friend who says that she has been complaining about Barney, and she thinks that Quinn likes him, but Quinn denies this. He tries to ask her out on date, but she continually avoids answering and only wishes to hang out at the strip club, and asks him to pay her for dances, so that she doesn't get in trouble with her manager. Ted hears about this and realizes she is just playing Barney. When Barney sees Quinn behaving much the same towards another client, he realizes Ted was right and storms off, leaving her feeling guilty. Later, Barney runs into Quinn in a coffee house.

One of the main characters, Barney is a womanizer who uses many 'plays' in his 'playbook' to help him have sex with women. The character is known for his love of wearing expensive suits, laser tag , alcohol and various catchphrases, including "Suit up! In later seasons, he has a few serious relationships, marries, divorces, and has a child with an unnamed woman from a one-night stand. Critics have praised the character and credit him for much of the show's success. He is considered the show's breakout character. The show's creators envisioned Barney as what Bays later described as a "large, John Belushi -type character"; [4] nonetheless, Megan Branman, the casting director for How I Met Your Mother , invited Harris to audition. He assumed that he was invited solely because the two were friends and did not believe he had a chance of winning the role.

In Pilot , Barney introduces Ted to Robin. His first description of her is "You know she likes it dirty". One of the first signs of their growing friendship is Robin agreeing to Barney's increasingly scandalous dares to say certain things on her news show, knowing no one is actually watching. During this night out, Robin is better at being a wingman than Ted ever was. At the end of the evening, Barney disrobes assuming he will be hooking up with Robin.
